The bench came first.
Before the storefront, before the name printed on the bag, there was a bench, a bundle of hides, and one stubborn conviction: a shoe should outlive the season that sold it.
Hide
Not every part of a hide is worth the same. Across the back the leather is dense and holds a shape. Nearer the belly it stretches and goes soft. So the panels are chosen before anything is cut: the front and sides of a shoe come from the firmest part of the hide, and what is left goes to straps, linings and smaller pieces.
It is slower than cutting to a pattern, and it uses more leather than it has to. It is also why a pair still holds its shape after a year of real wear, instead of collapsing at the sides.
We buy full-grain and refuse corrected grain. Correcting a hide means sanding the flaws off and spraying a new surface over them. It looks immaculate in the box, and it cracks in its second year.
Bench
On the bench the pieces stop being leather and start being a shoe. They are skived thin where they meet, so the seams lie flat instead of ridging under a sock. They are closed with a saddle stitch, two needles and one thread worked from both sides at once, which is why cutting a single stitch never unravels the row.
Then the upper is drawn over a wooden last and left there under tension until it forgets it was ever flat. A last is not a mould. It is a memory, and the shoe keeps it long after it leaves the bench.
Sizes 39 to 45, on lasts we have kept and adjusted rather than replaced. It is why a 42 in our boots fits like a 42 in our classics.
Bag
The last thing that happens in the workshop is the quietest one. The pair is burnished, checked once more in daylight, and set into a plain cotton bag with the name stamped into the weave.
The bag is not packaging. It is the thing still in your cupboard in ten years, holding a pair you have had resoled twice and refuse to part with. "Beyond Fashion, it's Legacy" is printed on it because it is the shortest true sentence we know about this work.
